Our puma research on KAFB is conducted by Travis Perry , Megan Pitman, and Kate Thibault and is designed to meet several objectives. First, we will develop a population estimate for base pumas using a standard mark-resight population estimate. Then we will compare that to a population estimate we've invented that is derived from photo frequency of unmarked puma alone. If the two population estimates agree, we may have a valuable and cost effective tool for estimating puma populations in other places. We are also going to build a model of puma habitat use for the base and assess prey distribution. This project is still in the early stages more data will be available as it progresses.
